DURAND'S KINDRED SPIRITS This is Asher Durand's painting titled "Kindred Spirits." William Cullen Bryant and Thomas Cole are shown in the painting. It has been noted that early 19th century painters saw human forms in nature around them. J. Gray Sweeney at Arizona State University has written about this. Sweeney's article in the "Smithsonian Studies in American Art" [Fall 1989, Volume 3, Number 4, p. 43] also refers to David C. Huntington's work. Sweeney points out that the cliff in this painting suggests a human face. Bryant is pointing at the face in the cliff. |
