NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE - THE GREAT STONE FACE Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about the face which could be seen in a mountain in New Hampshire shown here in a photograph of a reprint of that book. Hawthorne's wife, Sophia Peabody, also painted in the 1830's before she married and records show she sought Allston's advice. Her sister, Elizabeth Peabody, who had been William Ellery Channing's secretary wrote the book Last Evening with Allston and had also been Bronson Alcott's assistant at Alcott's school in Concord, which leads us to Alcott's daughter... |
