Take away the markings and you see "what the thing is." This is water and rocks and it is very realistic.

Perhaps, you can see more. Perhaps, you are starting to realize that in Winslow Homer's paintings you can discover these "in addition to" objects that did not exist as physical objects in Nature, but which did exist in Homer's mind, and which he managed to also represent in his paintings.
