ELIHU VEDDER - THE FACE IN THE CLOUDS
Recall the Harper cover that Vedder did with the face on the moon.

Vedder did this drawing in 1866. Again the image is obvious and goes beyond what would be natural. He does not attempt to create a correspondence between the natural and the ideal. Although Vedder had a good imagination, he does not challenge our imagination.
