WINSLOW HOMER - LOST ON THE GRAND BANKS (detail 1)
Do you see the weeping lady or the paddling gnome-like character? If you see the weeping lady in white, the seamen are doomed, for Homer may have thought of Hawthorne's short story The Old White Maid in Twice Told Tales. Worldwide in folklore, "a lady in white" is associated with death. If you see the gnome-like paddling character, they are safe.
